Spring is finally showing up in Minnesota! As homeowners, it’s tempting to focus only on the fun stuff—planning gardens, cleaning up the yard, or cracking open windows for that fresh spring air. But before you go full “spring mode,” it’s a good idea to check your home for signs that winter may have left behind some issues.

Here are a few things to keep an eye on:

New or Widening Cracks in Walls or Foundations

Minnesota’s freeze-thaw cycles can put serious pressure on your home’s foundation. As the ground shifts, small cracks can appear—or existing ones can grow.

Take a walk around your basement or foundation walls. If you spot new cracks or notice that old ones are widening, mark the ends with a pencil and check back in a couple months. If the crack is growing, it’s worth having a professional take a closer look.

Drafts Where There Were None Before

Noticing a cool breeze near windows or doors, even with everything closed? Winter weather can shift frames and wear down seals, creating small gaps that let outside air sneak in.

Now’s the time to check for drafts and refresh any worn-out weatherstripping or caulk. Catching it early helps keep your home more energy-efficient year-round.

Water Stains or Musty Smells

Water stains on ceilings or walls aren’t always from a roof leak—they could be from condensation, hidden pipe issues, or melting snow that worked its way inside.

Take a good look around closets, corners,  under sinks, or behind stored contents that are up against a wall. If something smells musty or you see yellowish stains, there may be moisture hiding out. The sooner you find it, the better.

Unusual Noises in Pipes or HVAC

Hearing gurgling, clanging, or banging in your plumbing or vents? That could be a sign of trapped air, fluctuating pressure, or components adjusting after months of cold.

While some noises are harmless, anything persistent or unusual might be worth a quick check by a plumber or HVAC tech.

Gutter or Downspout Problems

Once the snow melts, your gutters and downspouts go back to work—directing water away from your foundation. But if they’re clogged, damaged, or misaligned, you could end up with pooling water or soggy landscaping.

During the next rain, step outside and see how the water flows. Check the seams of the gutters for leaks. If you notice overflow, it’s time to clear things out or make adjustments.

Sagging or Warped Roofing Materials

Snow and ice can do a number on your roof, especially if it was already due for repairs. Look for shingles that are curling, cracking, or appear uneven. A quick visual inspection from the ground (or with binoculars) can give you a good sense of whether something looks off.

Signs of Unwanted Critters

Mice, squirrels, and even birds look for warm spots to nest over the winter. Attics, garages, and wall cavities are all fair game.

Keep an eye out for droppings, nests, chewed wires, or unusual noises, especially in the early morning or evening. Sealing up entry points and checking insulation can help prevent more damage.
